The Chakras and the Tarot Trumps: Part I
The Root Base: Magus and Blood Mother
The Muladhara or root chakra, which relates to the reproductive organs, is, in many ways, the
most rudimentary link between mind and body. Its energies are raw and primal, unrefined and
instinctual, relating directly to survival and our sexual drives. It is the first and most powerful of
the five chakras aroused by the physical senses - in this case, smell - and the influences which
cloud and mute its activity are standard to the unevolved design of the human animal. Ironically, it
is also the point at which potential magickal energies are the most concentrated. It is the
manifestation of order in a fashion that can fully utilize the viable energies of the accompanying
chakra centers. By this definition, the imagery of two of the Tarot keys are suggested: The
Magician and the Empress.
The accessing of chakra points - the seven key energy sites in the human body, each of which corresponds to a particular organ or gland - is an effective method of generating specific vibratory energies necessary for varied magickal undertakings. The use of the imagery from the Tarot trumps as activation prompts for the opening of the centers serves two purposes: they can effectively increase the spontaneity and potency of the process of and the energy generated through the opening of each chakra point, and their use will assist in the incorporation of the symbolically-rich Tarot archetypes into the magickian's active astral work.
To begin, gather together the appropriate tarot trumps - several versions of each, if possible. Study them and allow your mind to assess and draw forth the appropriate meanings in relation to the imagery. Put the cards away and, through creative visualization, allow the images to become animate. This may take some time, but be diligent. Then initiate your chakra meditation.
Sit in a quiet area with your spine at a ninety degree angle to the floor. Begin deep breathing to
relax yourself, taking your breath in through your nose and releasing it through your mouth.
Become aware of the location of the perineum and try to incorporate the flexing of said muscles
into your meditation. Once you are fully relaxed, ground yourself and start becoming fully aware
of your body and its rhythms. Starting at the top of your head, travel down the length of your
spine until you reach the base; this is he seat of the root chakra.
Turn your psychic focus inward and gaze about. The root chakra's key color is red, so your vision should be a whirling vortex of crimson energy. You are now within the root chakra. Consider all of the magickal correspondences of the color red, all of the Mercurial and Venusian allusions suggested by the two Tarot trumps. Now look into the vortex - what images present themselves? What is the quality of the energy surrounding you? Much like pathworking, the integrated images will act as agents of intensification and clarity as they relate to (and reveal aspects to you about) your true self. And the stronger the psychic links, the more quickly you can utilize the energy and the more intense the potential that the energy carries.
Commence with any necessary cleansing, healing or magickal work. When you're finished, slow the whirling of the chakra's center and close the point. Never leave a chakra opened. Record in your Book of Mirrors your experiences and progress.
