the Frater's Mark

My fellow web-addicted Pagans, with this issue I choose to address a subject that finally, after the explosion of "enlightenment" over the past two centuries (which birthed many monsters that we have yet to bring fully under our control), seems to be finding its common ground with magic: science. More and more, the metaphysical aspects of science are crossing the stoic boundaries of lethargic reason and repressive logic to illuminate the basic truth that every good ceremonial magickian knows: magic is science that, at this given moment in time, we cannot comprehend. And likewise, magic is becoming suitably colored by many of the methods of the modern scientific approach and the attitudes of the groundbreaking scientists. Tangible proof is no longer a prerequisite for scientific theory, no longer a fetter on the scientific imagination; the scientific method, combined with the magickal will and imagination, often provides wonderfully insightful revelation in terms of ritual results.

Consider quantum physics, fractal mathematics and art and the development of chaos theory; then look to the works of Crowley, Regardie, Hine, Carroll, DuQuette. Perfect mirrors? Hardly. But the overlap is obvious and encouraging. One thing to keep in mind, however, is the nature of the beast that is western capitalistic culture (or as several prominent sociologists have noted, western culture has, through advances in communication, become the global culture): this country still keeps the focus squarely on marketability in terms of funding and that means that scientific progress, both ethical and tangible, is often glacial in nature. But keep a positive thought as you enjoy the following sites which, if you enter with an open mind, embrace the promises of both applied science and applied magick. Is there an echo in here?

The Specularium - A site for speculative ideas in science and magic.

Fifth Aeon Egregore - Phil Hine's (one of the fathers of Chaos Magick) homepage.

The Leriweb Homepage - The key memespace location

Online Papers on Consciousness - This site redefines "inclusive"!

The Quantum Brain Page - David Bohm's dream-come-true

Anomalies and Enigmas - I had to throw this one in

The Guide to Ultimate Reality - quantum field theory, relativity, vedanta - this one has it all
