the Frater's Mark

Merry Meet fellow Pagan web-dwellers! Can you smell it? What the wind is carrying, now that the chill of winter has gone the way of the dodo (at least for the next six or so months)? No, not the BS wafting down from Washington, carried by the weather phenomena known as El George-o (if only we could predict when that hot air front would pass). But rather, the scent of newly mown grass, of cleansing spring rains, and, most of all, the hearty smell of the rich, fertile soil, ready to be tilled, turned and sown. It's gardening time, and I'm here to present you with a few angles you might not have considered while planning out your garden this time around. And these are not simply Pagan trappings, designed to make your plot more Green Man friendly. These are proven techniques that have graced the pages of the Farmer's Almanac and the well-known Foxfire series of books. They have been utilized by master gardeners for years who swear by their validity. And, on top of everything else, you can smile a wicked little smile, as they seem to be cut from the core cloth of Paganism: gardening by the moon's sign, gardening by the moon's phase and considering the planetary influences of the plants you're preparing to raise. Given the info, with a little effort and a little help from the gods, your garden could be the most bountiful of your green-thumbing career. So dig deep, get those hands dirty - pretend you're a politician out for soft money and campaign reform has never been suggested - and become one with the soil and the seeds. And with the wisdom that these websites present, become closer to nature and all her many fruitful cycles, not just sunrise and sunset. Keep in mind the old adage: All Sun and no Moon makes any magickal gardener a dull Pagan. Blessed gardening!

Lunar Agriculture or Moon Planting

Gardening by the Moon

Information including the Zodiac signs, their nature or conditions, the tasks best done and crops best started under their influences and valuable magickal notes for the witchy gardener.

Planting by the Moon's Phase

Lunar Gardening

Two interesting essays (though the latter is far more scholarly and scientific in tone) on the merits of including the moon's phase in your gardening considerations. Hey, if you do it for your rituals, why not do it for your garden?

Planets in the Garden

This short piece is helpful as it assigns many common (and some not so common) plants a planetary influence. There's also a more in-depth second part to this essay for the master magickal gardener. Remember: don't plant your radishes and your beans too close together!

Gothic Gardening

A very intriguing site with insights into everything from moondials (yes, I said moondials) to various theme gardens (the night garden, le jardin sanguinaire, gardening for the fey, etc.) to what to grow to attract spirits into your natural abode. Very cool.
