Cool Stuff and Where to Get It
This month I have decided to devote myself to compiling a list of various places to get stuff of a Pagan variety. All the places I list I have ordered from personally and feel comfortable recommending. They are grouped below by category. I hope you find them useful.
Periodicals
Sagewoman Magazine
This magazine, as well as its sister publications Pangaia and Blessed Bee, can be ordered directly from the publisher through this site. Anne Newkirk Niven, the publisher and head of Blessed Be publications is very professional and subscriptions get started in a timely manner. While it's true, at least here in St Joe county, that you can buy Sagewoman at Barnes and Noble, you cannot get the other two that way, and as I learned from my exploits online, if you order right from the publishers, they get a much better percentage of the money. This may not matter much when talking about something like Time or TV Guide, but with a small publisher like this, it makes all the difference in the world.
Green Egg
Green Egg is one of the oldest Pagan publications out there. Published by The Church of All Worlds, it has been a perennial favorite. This website will allow you to subscribe directly from the publishers for Green Egg, as well the children's magazine they put out, How About Magic?. Both are quality publications that I know I get a great deal of enjoyment from. A big difference between Green Egg and the others is the number of issues you get with a subscription. All the others I discuss here are quarterly periodicals, whereas Green Egg, like our own Goat and Candle, is bimonthly.
Circle
Circle (aka Circle Network News) is another old favorite. Put out by the Circle Sanctuary in Wisconsin, it covers thematic topic every quarter with reader submissions strongly encouraged. Every issue also has a Pagan Passages section, which can be neat to read as people send in announcements for births, deaths, initiations, handfastings, and coven formations. Parts of my own life can be found in back issues in that section. it's truly a trip through time to look at them. The website also has information on festivals that Circle sponsors as well as information from the Lady Liberty League, a group devoted to preserving freedom of religion here in the US and abroad.
Of A Like Mind
This isn't a magazine, but more of a newspaper format publication. It is published by The Re-Formed Congregation of the Goddess, one of the oldest and largest Dianic groups to attain non-profit status and legal recognition. News of RGCI is found in there as well as cool articles about such topics as tarot, herbcraft, and priestessing. The RGCI also sponsors the Cella training program. It affords the equivalent of a masters degree in divinity and legal ordination for the women who complete the three year course.
Clothing
Wiccan Ware
A site run by Michiana's own Foxy and Becca, Wiccan Ware is primarily an online business, though their products are available at New Journeys in Elkhart. Their t-shirts and sweatshirts are of the highest quality and durability. The sweatshirt I bought Billiam as a Yule gift this past year is one of his favorites, so it gets a lot of wear, and it still looks as good as the day I got it in the mail.
Northern Sun
This company carries cool t-shirts, bumper stickers, buttons, posters, and such items as sarongs and broomstick skirts from India and Bali. Their website shows all the stuff, but you can't order online. Luckily, the website does give you info for how to order through them or to get a print catalogue.
Herbs
Mountain Rose Herbs
I cannot say enough good things about this company. They have an exhaustive catalogue of herbs in various bulk quantities as well as essential oils, tinctures, teas, and supplies for making your own herbal medicines and books on how to do it. Their staff is friendly and courteous and everything arrives promptly. The herbs are all organically grown or carefully wildcrafted and of highest quality. The company is Pagan-owned and operated, which is a definite plus in my book.
Music
Ladyslipper
Ok, I am a little biased when it comes to Ladyslipper, since I used to be in a band whose recordings were sold through them, but they're great! The website is well-organized and easy to navigate, and their print catalogue is equally clear. They ship quickly, and I've never had a problem with them.
Serpentine Music
Serpentine, run by Anne Hill (co-author of the book Circle Round), is another staple when it comes to getting the best music that Pagan groups have to offer. I recently purchased three CDs through their website. While the site needs some tooling as navigation can be a bear, the selection is huge, and the prices are reasonable. The CDs all arrived promptly and in excellent condition. One thing the site offers that I like is Real Audio snippets of some of the music so you can decide if you will like it or not. I fell absolutely in love with Inkubus Sukubus's 'Belladonna and Aconite' that way. Their print catalogue, should you choose to go that route, is a model of clarity the website could do well to emulate.
Goodies
Dan's Chocolates
Ok, so sue me, I know chocolate has nothing to do with Paganism, and the site isn't owned by a Pagan, but by Gaia, this stuff is fantastic! I got some for Mother's Day, and I am hooked! The prices are reasonable. The chocolates are hand-dipped by a Swiss master chocolatier, and they actually include a little guide with each box telling you what the different varieties within are. You must try them at least once if you like chocolate at all. They beat Godiva hands down!
Statuary
Mythic Images
This company is run by Oberon and Morning Glory Zell of The Church of All Worlds. All the pieces are done by them. Billiam bought me Oberon's seminal work, The Millennial Gaia, for Yule, and it is breathtaking. The other pieces they carry are all wonderful as well, but I have to admit that Gaia is my favorite. Every piece comes with a little booklet discussing it, and they are all packaged very tenderly.
Sacred Source
Another great company, this time run by a group that works directly with a collective of sculptors in India helping them to support themselves through this work. I have several pieces large and small from them and am very happy with the work. Billiam loved the Mithras he got as another Yule gift. Their online site shows many pieces, but the full list is only in their print catalogue, which you can obtain through emailing them. Their email address is on the site.
Miscellaneous Cool Stuff
Azure Green
I cannot get away with doing any list on where to get cool stuff and leave these guys out. I am a regular customer of theirs. One of the best places to get books on all subjects, as well as gorgeous jewelry, incense resins and pre-made incense, altar tools and goodies, tarot decks, and bumper stickers. I buy a year's supply of charcoal at a time from them for about $14.00. I have several necklaces, bracelets and anklets from them as well as books of many sorts - quite a few of whom I could not find elsewhere.
Hope this gets everyone off to a good start! Bright Blessings until later.
