Treasuring a Bit of Nature

Woodlawn Nature Center, located at 604 Woodlawn Avenue on the north side of Elkhart, Indiana, first opened its doors to the public in 1965, the vision of a woman who was unlike most women in those days. She was strong willed and determined to better the environment and the community in which she lived. That woman was Dorothy Greenleaf Boyington.

Dorothy donated some land and a building that was to become Woodlawn Nature Center to the City of Elkhart. Her dream was to provide nature and environmental education to all who had an interest, even those struggling to make ends meet. All were welcome and encouraged to attend. The nature center has always been governed by a volunteer board of directors. In the center's early days, it was staffed by dedicated volunteers. It soon became clear that to successfully carry out Dorothy's vision, a full time director/naturalist was needed. In the early 1990's, creating this position became a reality. The center also obtained the important 501(C)(3)status, making it a not-for profit organization.

After that, the center really did experience growth! Grants were written to create stunning and educational exhibits. School and scout groups came for environmental and nature programs. Guest speakers were invited to provide exciting programs. The center also established a membership directory.

Today, Dorothy's vision continues. Many things have changed, but the vision remains the same: to educate as many people as possible about the importance of caring for our precious natural resources. This is done by providing Saturday afternoon and weekday evening programs, workshops, and classes. Every summer, there are nature classes for preschoolers through sixth grade children. Many hands-on materials have been added, and the number of these continues to grow.

The nature center itself is a very hands-on institution, where all are encouraged to use each of their senses to learn about our Mother Earth. Everyone is invited to check out this "hidden jewel" in Elkhart and discover for themselves what a wonderful establishment is available.

Members and volunteers are always needed. If you want to make a difference for the Earth and learn about Her and Her inhabitants, call (574) 264-0525 to find out how.
